Why I photograph families differently.
Many families arrive here after searching for a Seattle family photo mini session and wondering how it compares to a full family session. It is a smart question, and an important one.
While mini sessions can work well for some photographers and some situations, I do not typically offer mini sessions. Instead, I focus on full family sessions, and there is a very intentional reason for that.
Why I do not typically offer family photo mini sessions
Mini sessions are designed to be quick. They are scheduled back to back, held at a set location, and built around speed.
While that can sound appealing, it often creates the opposite experience for families, especially those with young children.
When I photograph families, my priority is not how fast we can move. It is connection, comfort, and creating space for real moments to happen.
Over the years, I have found that families consistently receive better images and have a much better experience when they are given time.
Time matters more than people expect
Kids need time to warm up. Parents need time to relax. The best moments almost always happen after everyone settles in.
Mini sessions rarely allow for that.
Even though I am very efficient in how I photograph and guide families, I do not rush the experience. Giving ourselves time means kids can be kids, parents can breathe, and nothing feels forced or stressful.
That is why I choose to offer full family sessions.
Full family sessions are still efficient
Choosing a full session does not mean spending hours photographing. I work intentionally and efficiently throughout the session. My sessions are usually around 45 minutes to an hour and yield a full gallery of images!
What it does mean is that we are not watching the clock. We move at a pace that feels calm and natural, and that makes a noticeable difference in how your photos feel.
Many families are surprised by how relaxed the experience is, even though we are moving with purpose the entire time.
What a full family session offers that mini sessions do not
A full family session allows for flexibility with timing and location, space for kids to warm up, and more variety in your final images.
It also allows moments to unfold naturally, instead of trying to capture everything within a very short window.
This is especially helpful for families with toddlers, multiple children, or anyone who wants photos that feel real and connected.
Are mini sessions ever available?
On rare occasions, I may offer limited mini sessions. These are usually reserved for returning families or specific seasonal events.
Mini sessions are not a regular offering, and they are shared directly with my email list first. If mini sessions are something you are interested in, being on my list is the best way to stay informed.
Choosing what is right for your family
If you are deciding between a Seattle family photo mini session and a full family session, here is my honest guidance.
If you are looking for something quick and transactional, a mini session with another photographer may be a better fit.
If you want photos that feel relaxed, natural, and connected, a full family session is almost always the better choice.
I photograph families throughout Seattle and the greater Seattle area, focusing on full family sessions that allow time for ease and connection.
If you are unsure whether a full session is right for your family, I am always happy to talk it through and answer your questions.
